Busted Club and Long (for Me) Drives – Memories at TPC San Antonio

As I tuned into the Valero Open this weekend, it brought back memories of my rare opportunity in 2021 to play a round on the course. It was a scorching summer day, mid-week, and fortunately, the course was relatively empty – just the way I prefer it!

It was during that round that I unfortunately managed to wreck my PXG Driver with a clumsy toe shot or two (not covered under warranty). Frustration surged through me, not only because I’d need to fork out for a new driver, but also because it once again reminded me of how much I sometimes feel Golf Sucks.

I trudged back to the pro-shop, swallowing my pride to ask for the use of a loaner. There was some back-and-forth about policies versus customer service, but ultimately, the staff came through in an incredible way, providing me with a club that, to my chagrin, I can’t recall the make or model. Nevertheless, armed with this borrowed club, I managed to pull off two of the most spectacular drives of my life.

For those unfamiliar with my game, hitting even close to 200-220 off the tee is a rarity for me, and hitting it straight is practically a miracle. Yet, on that memorable day, as confirmed by my Arrcos monitor, I unleashed two astonishing drives: 279 on Hole 9 (which I promptly triple-bogeyed after three failed approach attempts), and on Hole 17, I found myself just 44 yards from the green following a 264-yard drive (ending with a bogey, alas).

TPC San Antonio is undeniably stunning, offering a formidable challenge to golfers. It will forever hold the memory of my greatest drives…even if I can’t recall the club I used! Golf, sometimes, truly throws you curveballs.
